Although the number of deaths related to workplace violence by co-workers remains relatively small, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows this type of workplace violence incident is rising nationwide, according to the article ‘Active shooters at work on rise’ on the Houston Chronicle website.
The Houston Chronicle reports that BLS data reveals 61 people were killed by workplace violence at their jobs by a co-worker in 2014, up from 49 people killed in in 2011. However, only 15 percent of the workplace violence victims out of the overall 409 workplace homicides in 2014 were killed by co-workers.
Workplace violence specialists suggest that the increase in workplace violence deaths “reflects the growing anxieties among employees as wages stagnate, living costs rise, and on-the-job pressures intensify from companies operating with leaner staffs,” the Houston Chronicle reports.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found that the number of “active shooter” incidents did indeed rise, the Houston Chronicle reports, with the average number of such incidents rising from an average of 6.4 each year between 2000 and 2006 to an average of 16.4 each year from 2007 to 2013.
According to the FBI, the 160 workplace violence shootings in the 14-year period killed 486 people and wounded 557. The Houston Chronicle article is available at http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/article/Active-shooters-at-work-on-rise-7468247.php.
